What’s new
What’s changed in Pinchwise, newest first. It’s in beta, and much of what changes comes from people’s feedback. Send feedback
Recipes from photos
- New Photo of a recipe: take or choose a photo of a printed recipe, such as a cookbook page or a recipe card, and Pinchwise reads it on your device. The photo never leaves it and isn’t kept. Check the text against the photo, fix anything it misread, then scale it like any recipe.
- New A recipe from a cookbook or magazine keeps the book’s name and author. Share and Send to phone send your amounts and that credit, never the book’s steps.
This page, and a tip for recipe photos
- New This page: what’s changed in Pinchwise, newest first. The footer’s link says “New” when something has come out since you last looked.
- Better Have a photo of a recipe card or a cookbook page? The paste box says how to copy its text on your phone, tablet or computer, ready to paste and scale.
- New On Android, Pinchwise installed from your browser is in the Share menu: share a recipe page to Pinchwise from Chrome or another app to import it. How to install it
- New On iPhone, iPad and Mac, Pinchwise on your Home Screen or Dock keeps its own recipes, apart from Safari’s. A recipe saved in Safari, such as one from the bookmark, can now be copied to it, steps and notes included: Send to phone, then Copy to my Home Screen app.
Beta, feedback, and Pinchwise on your home screen
- New Pinchwise is in beta, and you can send feedback from any page: what came out wrong, what’s missing, or what you’d change. You can see exactly what will be sent before you send it. Send feedback
- New Install Pinchwise on your phone, tablet or computer, with its own icon and window. After your first visit it opens without a connection, installed or not. How to install it
- New Bread and pizza mode: baker’s percentages and hydration for doughs, and “Scale to this” to make a number of dough balls of the size you want.
- Better Cook mode’s “For this step” lists every ingredient a step names.
Amounts in the steps, and a better cook mode
- New Steps say how much of each ingredient to use (“Stir in the garlic (2 cloves)”), and it scales with the recipe.
- New A notebook for each recipe: notes for next time, notes on one line or step, and “Make it like last time”.
- New Cook mode opens full screen, with bigger text and high contrast if you want them.
- New “Worth a check”: likely typos, such as 2 tablespoons of baking soda or an oven at 350°C, are pointed out. The recipe is never changed for you.
- Fixed Send to phone works on older iPhones and iPads.
- Better A tab left open picks up a new version of Pinchwise by itself.
Whole cans and eggs
- New When a scaled size uses part of a can, a packet or an egg, Pinchwise offers nearby sizes that use them whole, and the shopping list says what’s left over.
My kitchen
- New My kitchen: add your pans, pots and cookers, and scaling advice talks about the ones you have, such as which pan fits a doubled recipe or how many batches it takes. Open My kitchen
- New Notes for glass and dark pans, a reminder to check a pan is oven-safe, and a warning before glass goes under the broiler.
- Better Recipes from dozens more websites import correctly.
Sorting, filters and a smarter shopping list
- New Sort and filter My recipes, star your favorites, and mark the days you cooked something.
- New The shopping list is grouped by store section. Lines can have notes and a store, staples you always have stay off it, and it suggests store sizes.
Search, and recipes from more pages
- New Search My recipes by name, or by the ingredients you have.
- New Pages without recipe data can be read from their text. When a site turns the import away, Pinchwise offers the one-click bookmark instead.
- New Canning recipes are made exactly as written, with a link to tested guidance. A recipe for homemade baby formula always shows a warning.
Safer scaling
- New Scaling notes for pressure cookers, slow cookers, deep frying, candy and brines.
- Better Imported recipes leave out the author’s personal asides. Their page is always credited and linked.
- Fixed Pinchwise works on older iPads (iPadOS 15).
Pinchwise is live
